When you think about the superyacht industry, the ‘green’ agenda may not be the first thing to spring to mind. We are accustomed to thinking of the lifestyle and aspirations of superyacht owners, in terms of conspicuous consumption. Indeed, they have been targeted as examples of needless harm to our environment, despite their rather modest impact on emissions compared to other industries.
And yet, the new breed of owners are driving significant advances, such as the move from diesel propulsion to hybrid technology. These initiatives can’t be dismissed as mere ‘virtue signaling’, as this new breed of owners are driven by a sense of mission or purpose. They aspire to a new kind of leadership. Not content with the acquisition of coveted baubles, they are pushing the boundaries of what is possible and underwriting the rapid evolution of ecologically sound engineering.
