If the next generation of superyachts is to evolve to meet the owner’s vision, it must embrace technology design at an early stage in the design process. As things stand, we refer to design in very narrow terms, the creative and artistic endeavours that fashion elegant exteriors and interiors. This leaves the implementation of audio-visual, entertainment, lighting and communications systems to separate teams, with the result that owners are missing out on the best available technologies. This was argued in some detail by Edwin Edelenbos of FWD Innovations, writing in Superyacht News in June of this year.

The inclusion of technology design at the planning stage, would give owners a far superior onboard experience. A lack of joined-up thinking leaves owners and their guests to settle for technical solutions that are out of date by some 15 years.
Let’s work together, on a shared specification that respects the owner’s vision, as well as the creative and technological talents required to bring that vision to life and take this industry to the next level.
